The Depression

[January 2 through May 14, 1964]

This was the most terrible and painful period of my life! It began abruptly on January 2, 1964 and ended quietly on May 14, 1964 at the death of my father. Thoughts of suicide were constant throughout the period. Yet, in the midst of it, I managed to survive defending my doctoral dissertation in February. Three existential experiences during that period come to mind: 1) standing before General Atomic scientists in January; 2) defending the dissertation in February; and 3) a sentimental journey with my father during his last month alive.
